Named in honor of the Tongva people, Tongva Peak stands as a testament to their enduring legacy. It is a prominent point in the Verdugo Mountains. These mountains are also known as the Verdugo Hills. They are a small mountain range south of the San Gabriel Mountains.

Tongva Peak reaches 2,656 feet. The peak was officially christened in 2003. The dedication ceremony celebrated the area’s indigenous roots. Native American dancers, local residents, and officials attended.

The Tongva people once thrived in villages from Tujunga to San Bernardino. They also lived southwest into the Los Angeles basin. For thousands of years, this land was their home.

Now, let’s delve into the geographical context of Tongva Peak. The Verdugo Mountains stretch eight miles long. They are just over three miles wide. The range parallels the San Gabriel Mountains. The Crescenta Valley lies between these ranges.

The Verdugo Mountains form part of the northeastern boundary of the San Fernando Valley. The Verdugo Wash separates them from the San Rafael Hills. These mountains rise dramatically from the San Fernando Valley floor. This exaggerates their height from certain vantage points.

The Verdugo Mountains consist of igneous and metamorphic rocks. These rocks are similar to those in the San Gabriel Mountains.

The Verdugo Mountains have risen over the last seven million years. This uplift is due to crustal shortening. The Verdugo Fault accommodates some of this shortening. This fault may be the youngest in the system. It forms the current boundary. It separates the Transverse Ranges from the Los Angeles basin.

Uplift along the Verdugo Fault may total approximately 1.6 miles. The rapid rise is reflected in the mountains’ steep topography. It is also evident in their rapid erosion.

The mountains were part of the indigenous Tongva people’s homelands for over 7,000 years. Villages existed at some springs in the canyons. The village of Wikangna was possibly located at the Verdugo Hills Golf Course.

These mountains were named for Jose Maria Verdugo. He held the Rancho San Rafael land grant. This grant covered the mountains during California’s Spanish and Mexican periods.

Fire is a natural part of the chaparral ecosystem here. Plants are adapted to survive or reproduce after fires. Natural fire frequencies range from 30 to 40 years.

Tongva Peak and the Verdugo Mountains are now used for recreation. Hiking and mountain biking are popular activities. The mountains also host communications installations.

Think about the Tongva people. They thrived in this area for millennia. Tongva Peak is a reminder of their history. It also serves as a symbol of respect.

Consider the endurance of the Tongva. Their spirit lives on in the name of this peak. Remember their connection to this land. It is a vital part of Los Angeles’ story.
