The Tomb of Queen Sindeok rests peacefully here in Seoul. Queen Sindeok the second wife of King Taejo was a woman of significant influence. She wasn’t just a royal consort. Her influence extended to the succession. Despite King Taejo having six sons from his first wife Queen Sinui Queen Sindeok managed to have her son Bangseok named Crown Prince. This was a remarkable achievement in a patriarchal society.
Tragedy struck in 1396. Queen Sindeok passed away. King Taejo was heartbroken. He built Heungcheonsa Temple near her original tomb as a place of prayer and remembrance.

Her sons Prince Bangbeon and Prince Bangseok became entangled in a deadly conflict with their half-brothers sons of Queen Sinui. Yi Bang-won a son of Queen Sinui ultimately prevailed. He murdered Queen Sindeok’s sons to secure his own claim to the throne. This brother became King Taejong.
King Taejong held a grudge against Queen Sindeok. He removed her name from the royal register. He even used parts of her original tomb to repair a bridge. The Tomb of Queen Sindeok which was originally located near Deoksugong Palace was moved to its present location in the countryside. It remained neglected for centuries before being restored.
