“1851-1895” Do you see that inscription? This tablet marks the site of Detroit’s last toll gate.

The Toll Gate Monument stands as a reminder of a bygone era. This marks a time when plank roads and toll gates shaped Detroit’s transportation landscape. Let’s step back to understand the story behind this monument.

In 1848, the State Legislature introduced wooden plank roads. Their purpose was to reduce travel time to Detroit from Lansing. Lansing was the new State Capitol. The Lansing Central Plank Road Company was owned by local merchants. They obtained a charter to plank the route from north Lansing to Howell. At Howell, the road connected with the road from Detroit.

Imagine traveling on these plank roads. Toll gates were essential components of this system. These toll gates ensured the upkeep and maintenance of the plank roads. The Detroit area had several toll gates. They collected fees from travelers. These fees funded road repairs and operations.

One notable toll gate stood on Woodward Avenue. Another one operated on East Jefferson Avenue. The toll gate on East Jefferson Avenue operated from 1851 through 1895. The Toll Gate Monument on East Jefferson Avenue marks its location. The Louisa St. Clair Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution placed the tablet.

Another toll gate was located on Woodward Avenue. It stood near Covington Drive in Palmer Park. This gate remained until October 1908. The Fort Pontchartrain Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution marked its site in 1935. The inscription reads “100 feet east of this spot stood until October 1908 one of the last of the Woodward Ave. toll gates.”

These toll gates were more than just collection points. They were also community hubs. Tollgate houses served as gathering places. Visitors could rest and socialize there. They also served as local mail drop-off points. The tollgate operator lived there.

Today, only one tollgate house remains in Michigan. It is located at the Meridian Historical Village.

Consider the impact of these toll gates. They played a crucial role in Detroit’s development. They facilitated trade and travel. They connected communities. They supported the region’s economic growth.
