Once a symbol of industry, the Tobacco Swamp and its surroundings now offer a breath of fresh air. The site of the Tobacco Swamp was once a sprawling tobacco factory. It stood in the heart of Bangkok for over half a century. Heavy trucks constantly moved raw tobacco and finished cigarettes.
But today, this space has transformed. It is now a green oasis. The Tobacco Swamp is part of an expansion of Benjakitti Park. This transformation is a stunning success. It provides a 40-hectare escape for city dwellers.
Imagine, if you will, the air thick with the smell of tobacco. Now, consider the fresh air. It is a welcome change. The park now includes a 1.6-kilometer elevated walkway. Below the walkway are water-purifying wetlands. Over 8,000 new trees have been planted. There are even pickleball and basketball courts. A dog-walking zone provides space for pets and owners.
The Tobacco Swamp area, maintained by Bangkok City Hall, covers about 25 acres. This land belonged to the Tobacco Authority of Thailand. Today, locals and tourists flock here. They take selfies and videos. Many post them on Instagram and TikTok. Joggers enjoy the paths.
Park critic Pravit Rojanaphruk described the experience perfectly. He noted that the paths encourage exploration. They seem random. Getting lost is part of the fun. The paths wind across the upper and lower levels.
The Bangkok Post aptly calls it the city’s new green lung. The land once used for lung-damaging products now offers health and recreation.
This transformation highlights a positive change. Bangkok has turned an industrial site into a park. The Tobacco Swamp is now a haven. It offers a place for relaxation and exercise.
