Welcome to To-Ae-Ofa United Methodist Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a vibrant hub of faith and community. Did you know that the very first Methodist Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City was quite different? It stood on a site now occupied by a parking garage. That original structure. Dedicated in 1875 it served the growing Methodist community for over thirty years. As the congregation expanded they outgrew their space. This led to the sale of the original building in 1905. A brand-new location was purchased. The task of designing the impressive new building fell to renowned architect Frederick Albert Hale. Hale a man with a distinguished career designing buildings throughout the western United States. He created this stunning edifice you see before you today. Although many of his other works remain landmarks. This church stands as a testament to his talent. The dedication ceremony in 1906 drew a massive crowd. It was a celebration of faith and community. The church was filled beyond capacity people overflowing into the classrooms. Bishop Moore gave the dedicatory sermon. He was accompanied by Dr. Henry J. Talbott and Dr. Robert McIntyre. The total cost of construction property and furnishings was a significant sum close to $80000 generously donated by the community. The First United Methodist Church stands as a vital part of Salt Lake City’s history. It continues to serve as a beacon of faith and community. To-Ae-Ofa United Methodist Church carries on that legacy. It welcomes all to experience the warmth and spiritual connection that define its identity.
