Tucked away in the southeastern corner of Dongcheng District lies Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict. It’s a place brimming with life, home to over 31,000 people as of 2020. Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict may not be as flashy as some of Beijing’s more famous landmarks. But it holds a unique charm, whispering stories of the city’s rich past and dynamic present. Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict draws its name from the Tiyuguan Road, which translates to “Gymnasium Road.” This road, in turn, takes its name from the iconic Beijing Gymnasium. Imagine the area back in 1954. Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict didn’t exist yet. The land was divided among several other subdistricts: Hongqiao, Yuqinguan, Guanwangmiao, and part of Huoshenmiao. Then, in 1955, the Beijing Gymnasium and its accompanying offices were constructed. This marked the birth of Tiyuguan Road. Just three years later, in 1958, the surrounding areas merged. This officially created the Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict we know today. Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a vibrant community divided into eight smaller communities. These include Dongting, Congdian, Fahua Nanli, Tiyu Zongju, Nangangzi, Changqingyuan, Sikuaiyu, and Xitang. Each community adds its own flavor to the tapestry of Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict. While exploring Tiyuguanlu Subdistrict, take a moment to appreciate its subtle charm. It’s a place where history and modern life intertwine, creating a unique urban experience.
