“How did they do that?” you might ask. The question echoes the awe felt by those who first witnessed the Titans of Leixões in action. I am about to tell you about Titã do Molhe Sul do Porto de Leixões.

Titans are not mythical beings here but monumental steam-powered cranes. The Titã do Molhe Sul do Porto de Leixões represents a legacy from the architectural and engineering era. This era was defined by iron and steam power. It stands as a mark of Portuguese and global industrial heritage.

Imagine the late 1800s. The Port of Leixões was under construction between 1885 and 1895. Massive granite blocks needed placement far into the sea. How could they lift and position these enormous stones? The answer came in the form of two colossal cranes ordered from a French company. Due to their colossal appearance, they were named Titans. The Titã do Molhe Sul do Porto de Leixões and its sibling became essential to the port’s creation.

These giants could lift 50 tons. However, the Titan do Molhe Norte once fell into the sea during a storm in 1892. It was recovered three years later. Besides construction, Titã do Molhe Sul do Porto de Leixões served to load and unload cargo until the 1960s.

These Titans are unique because they are the only remaining examples of their kind. They show the force and power of that era. They offer a privileged look into the industrial age. They show us the architecture and machinery of iron.

Sadly, the Titã do Molhe Sul do Porto de Leixões collapsed in 2012. But many original pieces were saved. It was recently rebuilt. It now preserves many of its original parts.

You can now visit the Titan. Walk along its almost 69 meters of length and 17 meters of height. Feel the immensity of this machine. Guided tours are available Friday to Sunday. They start every hour between 10 am and 5 pm. There is a break between 1 pm and 2 pm. You can access the Titan through the Portaria do Molhe Sul. It is located in Matosinhos.

The Titan do Molhe Sul do Porto de Leixões isn’t just a machine. It is a symbol of innovation. It reminds us of the ingenuity required to build a major port.
