Established in 1965 as Wessell Library Tisch Library stands as a testament to Tufts University’s commitment to learning. Initially a brutalist structure it underwent a massive transformation. This transformation was fueled by a generous $10 million donation from Jonathan and Steve Tisch. The renovation added 80000 square feet. It also completely changed the library’s appearance and function.

The renaming to Tisch Library in 1996 marked a new era. The expanded space included a new level G. This was created by finishing unfinished space beneath the first floor. Level G now houses stacks and the Tufts Archival Research Center. The first floor contains stacks study rooms and the Mark Computer Lab. The second floor boasts the circulation desk the Hirsh Reading Room the Data Lab and the ever-popular Tower Cafe. The third floor offers classroom space and the impressive Digital Design Studio.

But Tisch Library’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the people who make it thrive. Students researchers faculty and staff all contribute to its vibrant atmosphere. Its collection of 2.7 million volumes supports every academic department at Tufts. The library also houses specialized collections including the Crane School collection and the Tufts collection. These collections serve scholars and researchers from around the world. They represent a vast storehouse of knowledge.

Tisch Library’s influence extends beyond Medford. As a member of the Boston Library Consortium it collaborates with other academic libraries in New England. This collaboration allows for resource sharing and expands research opportunities for everyone. The W Van Alan Clark Jr Library at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in Boston serves as a specialized branch. It focuses on fine arts and its connection to the main library in Medford is strengthened by the new Green Line Extension.
