How many times have you walked past this unassuming obelisk? The Tirah Memorial stands before you in Bonn Square a silent sentinel to a forgotten conflict. It’s Oxford’s first war memorial a testament to 61 men of the 2nd Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry who perished in the Tirah Campaign.

This imposing obelisk rising 25 feet high is more than just stone. It’s a story etched in Bath and Somerset stone. Francis Inigo Thomas a renowned garden designer created this memorial. His talent extended beyond gardens to this poignant tribute. The memorial’s foundations dug deep into the earth revealing a ghostly past. Human remains unearthed during construction were respectfully reburied at Osney Cemetery.

The Tirah Campaign itself a brutal conflict in 1897-98. The Afridi tribe rebelled against the British Raj engaging in fierce battles. General Sir William Lockhart led the counter-insurgency involving 34000 soldiers. The campaign lasted seven months spanning harsh winter weather. The battle was as difficult as the climate.

This monument isn’t without its mysteries. The inscription lists 62 names. One Brevet-Major AB Thruston died not in the Tirah Campaign but in Uganda. He fell victim to mutinous Sudanese troops in a separate campaign. The other 61 names represent a mix of ranks Privates buglers and officers. Their sacrifice is forever imprinted on this stone.

The unveiling ceremony in 1900 was an impressive event. Frederick Parker Morrell Oxford’s first university graduate mayor unveiled it. His daughter Frederica performed the honours as her mother was absent. Speeches were given by prominent figures like Alderman Buckell and Colonel Strachan. The ceremony marked a somber recognition of the fallen.
