This monument isn’t without its mysteries. The inscription lists 62 names. One Brevet-Major AB Thruston died not in the Tirah Campaign but in Uganda. He fell victim to mutinous Sudanese troops in a separate campaign. The other 61 names represent a mix of ranks Privates buglers and officers. Their sacrifice is forever imprinted on this stone.

The unveiling ceremony in 1900 was an impressive event. Frederick Parker Morrell Oxford’s first university graduate mayor unveiled it. His daughter Frederica performed the honours as her mother was absent. Speeches were given by prominent figures like Alderman Buckell and Colonel Strachan. The ceremony marked a somber recognition of the fallen.
