Imagine a sanctuary of peace amidst Ho Chi Minh City’s hustle. That is Tịnh Xá Linh Quang. It is a Buddhist temple with a story that began in simplicity.
Let’s step inside this unique temple. Tịnh Xá Linh Quang, also known as Chùa Linh Quang, sits at 40/60 Nguyễn Khoái in District 4. Many know this temple. It is famous not only in the city. People across the country know it. They know it for tales of exorcism and healing.
In 1953, Hòa thượng Thích Phổ Ứng founded Tịnh Xá Linh Quang. He built it on a 1,250 square meter plot. Hòa thượng Thích Phổ Ứng was a disciple of Đại sư Huệ Nhựt. Đại sư Huệ Nhựt was born in 1903 in Bình Thuận.
In 1921, Đại sư Huệ Nhựt lived in Gò Vấp, Gia Định. There he studied with Hòa thượng Thích Liễu Quang. He belonged to the Thiên Thai Thiền giáo tông. In 1936, he became a monk on Núi Bà Đen. He studied with Hòa thượng Thích Giác Phú. He was part of the Lâm Tế school.
In 1938, he chose a different path. He practiced asceticism. He initiated the Khất Sĩ Đại thừa Việt Nam tradition. After that, Thượng tọa Thích Từ Giang became the abbot. He renovated the temple in 1992.
Tịnh Xá Linh Quang now features ancient architecture. The architectural style resembles old temples in northern Vietnam. But it has a simpler modern touch. The temple gate is simple. It lacks multi-tiered roofs.
The overall structure includes the Main Hall. There is also a guesthouse. Residential buildings are on site. A number of other structures complete the complex.
The Main Hall at Tịnh Xá Linh Quang is special. It divides into three distinct sections. These divisions reflect the “Tam Bối vãng sanh” method.
The Superior Level represents the deities on the main altar. The Middle Level is where monks perform daily rituals. They practice reciting sutras. The Lower Level is for devotees. They come to worship. They chant daily.
The Superior and Middle Levels feature elaborate carvings. Lotus ponds decorate these areas. The Lower Level depicts a green pond. It has brick-colored banks.
The temple grounds have many trees. Statues dot the landscape. They encircle the temple courtyard. In 1989, Linh Quang founded a special center. It is the District 4 Education Center for Disabled Children. It is located at 91 Nguyễn Khoái.
Tịnh Xá Linh Quang is more than just a temple. It is a haven. It is a place of education. It is a testament to compassion and devotion. It continues to serve the community. Its doors remain open to all.
So, as we stand here before Tịnh Xá Linh Quang, let us appreciate its history. Let’s acknowledge its architectural beauty. And let’s honor its enduring spirit of kindness.
