Tingub

Hidden amongst the bamboo and a whispering creek, lies Tingub. It’s a place where the name itself whispers tales of refuge and gathering. The elders of Tingub say the Spaniards, upon discovering the converging waters of Canduman, Tabok, and Pagsabungan, named the area “Tingub,” meaning “to gather” or “accumulate,” after the small creek where the waters met. During World War II, Tingub became a sanctuary once more. People fleeing the Japanese invasion sought shelter in its hidden embrace, the thick bamboo offering a protective shield. Another account places this “tingub,” this gathering of people, much earlier, during the Philippine Revolution of 1898. Driven by fear of the Spaniards, people sought refuge in this old sitio of Canduman. The concentration of people hiding amongst the bamboo gave rise to the name “Tingub.” Today, Tingub is a barangay in Mandaue City, Cebu. The population stands at 6,082, a slight decrease from the 2015 census. The heart of Tingub beats with the energy of its residents, their lives woven into the fabric of this place of convergence. From the flowing waters that first drew people here to the protective embrace of the bamboo, Tingub continues to be a place where stories gather and history whispers through the leaves.
