Consider the Timber Tower. It is not just a structure but an innovative approach to wind energy. Let’s delve into the story of this unique tower in Hanover.

The Timber Tower represents a significant step towards ecological sustainability. The TimberTower GmbH built the world’s first wooden towers for wind turbines. These towers are specifically designed for the multi-megawatt class. Imagine a wind turbine tower primarily made of wood. This is a reality thanks to innovations at the Timber Tower.

Why wood? Traditional wind turbines rely on steel and concrete. These materials consume much energy during production. They also produce significant CO2 emissions. The Timber Tower offers an alternative. It is both economically sound and environmentally friendly. In fact a Timber Tower can be up to 20 percent cheaper. It is more energy-efficient. It is climate-friendly too.

The benefits extend beyond cost and emissions. Wood is easier to transport than steel or concrete. Wood is also a renewable resource. This makes the Timber Tower a sustainable choice for energy production. Picture the ease of transporting the materials to build this tower.

The first Timber Tower prototype stood 100 meters tall. It was erected near Hanover after extensive preparations. Cordes Holzbau was responsible for the tower’s installation. The structure comprised laminated timber panels. These panels were assembled on site. The tower’s wooden structure is sealed with plastic sheets. These sheets are also used for flat roofs.

But how does a wooden tower withstand the forces of nature? The Timber Tower uses special HSK systems with glued-in steel parts. These systems address the high forces at load application points. They also handle dynamic effects on the fasteners. TiComTec GmbH enabled the construction of such superlative towers. These fasteners weaken construction parts only slightly. They pass forces across a surface area instead of single points.

This design ensures a ductile conduct in case of failure. It is precisely calculable for dynamic evaluations. Before the 100-meter tower a smaller test tower was built. In 2010, a 25-meter test tower validated these concepts. The first timber tower for wind turbines was dedicated on December 20 2012. It was activated near Hanover. Leander Bathon and Rainer Bahmer captured its image through photography.

The TimberTower GmbH has ambitions to build even taller structures. Wooden towers reaching 140 and 160 meters are in the planning stages. Series production is also anticipated. The Timber Tower in Hanover exemplifies innovation. It combines economic viability with ecological responsibility. It marks a new chapter in renewable energy. It offers a glimpse into a future where sustainable materials play a central role.
