Imagine a time long ago. Imagine people gathered here at Tillehøie. They were performing ancient burial rituals.

Tillehøie is more than just a collection of mounds. It is a window into Bornholm’s distant past. These mounds tell a story of life death and ritual.

We stand at Tillehøie in Knudsker. This is a significant archaeological site. It offers a glimpse into Bronze Age Bornholm.

In 1824 Prince Christian Frederik visited Tillehøie. He oversaw the excavation of one of the mounds. What they found was remarkable. A stone-lined grave lay at the top. It measured ten feet long and two feet wide. It was aligned from south to north.

Inside this grave were the remains of four human heads. Bones lay scattered. A copper dagger broken and rusted was also found. A copper rivet perhaps from a bronze fitting completed the finds.

These discoveries paint a vivid picture. They show us the burial practices of the time. The placement of the bodies suggests a deliberate arrangement. The broken dagger hints at a warrior’s grave or a ritualistic breaking.

The archaeologist J.A. Jørgensen described Tillehøie in 1879. He noted the discovery of a flint arrowhead. This suggests even earlier activity at the site.

Tillehøie consists of six mounds in a row. They stretch along a natural ridge. This ridge runs from southwest to northeast. This alignment could have been significant to the people who built them.

The mounds themselves are testament to human effort. They required moving earth and stone. They were carefully constructed to honor the dead.

Consider the labor involved in creating these monuments. Consider the community effort it represents. Tillehøie was not built in a day. It took generations to create.

These grave mounds offer a connection to our ancestors. They connect us to people who lived and died on this island. They remind us of our shared human history.

Bornholm’s landscape is dotted with such sites. Tillehøie stands as a reminder of a time. This was a time when burial rituals held great importance.

Imagine the funeral processions winding their way to Tillehøie. Imagine the mourners gathered around the open grave. Imagine the chanting and the prayers.

Tillehøie provides a glimpse into the spiritual beliefs of our ancestors. It shows us how they honored their dead. It reveals their connection to the land.

Today Tillehøie stands as a protected historical site. It reminds us to respect the past. It invites us to learn from those who came before us.
