The anchor stands tall, a silent sentinel of the past. Its weathered surface tells stories of tumultuous seas and brave sailors. This is “Monument till krigsförlista sjömans minne”, a poignant memorial to the seafarers lost during WWII.

During the war, Sweden remained neutral, yet its merchant fleet was not spared. For over a thousand Swedes, the sea became a watery grave. Their ships, carrying vital goods, were torpedoed or sunk by mines. The anchor, a symbol of hope and anchorage, now rests on a granite block, inscribed with the names of the fallen.

The “Till krigsförlista sjömans minne” monument wasn’t always here. It was initially erected on another part of the city before being moved to its current location in 2005 due to the construction of the Citytunnel. If you look closely, you’ll notice beautiful reliefs designed by Ivar Ålenius-Björk. The whole monument was crafted by Eiler Graebe, a renowned architect, who ensured its simplicity reflected the solemnity of the occasion.

Looking at this memorial, you can’t help but feel a profound sense of gratitude – for those who braved the perils of the sea to keep Sweden afloat during a dark time. The anchor, forever fixed to the ground, reminds us of the countless lives lost and serves as a beacon, urging us to remember those who sacrificed their lives for their country’s wellbeing.
