Didn’t Cornelius Suydam once own this very spot? As late as 1929, his farm stood here. It even had a wood frame house. Now, we’re at Tilden Playground. It is a vibrant place for kids and adults alike.
The city acquired this land in 1948. Tilden Playground opened on October 2, 1950. It was the 532nd playground in the New York City Park system.
Originally, Tilden Playground had a tot play area. There were sports courts for older children. A large free-play area was available, too. It served as a space for roller skating or ice skating, depending on the season.
Today, Tilden Playground is getting a major upgrade. A new 35,000-square-foot community center is being built. It will have many cool features. Imagine a below-grade indoor gym. Basketball and other sports can be played there. Cardio and weight rooms are also planned.
There will be a multipurpose space for dance and yoga. A computer center will offer learning opportunities. An audio-visual education facility is also in the works. Two multipurpose classrooms will provide space for activities. And get this, a rooftop greenhouse.
1100 Architects designed the new community center. The NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and the NYC Department of Design & Construction are the clients. LERA is the structural engineer.
Think back to the time before Tilden Playground. Privately owned tennis courts once occupied this space. Handball courts and a field house were also here. Now, children’s laughter fills the air. The sounds of basketballs echo. The community gathers.
Tilden Playground has transformed over the years. It went from a farm to tennis courts to a playground. Now, it’s becoming a community hub. This transformation reflects the changing needs of the neighborhood. It shows a commitment to recreation and community engagement.
Consider the history beneath our feet. Cornelius Suydam’s farm is gone. The old tennis courts are a distant memory. Tilden Playground stands as a testament to progress. It is a place where memories are made. New York City continues to grow and evolve. Tilden Playground is a part of that story.
