Seven platforms stand tall. This is Tilak Bridge railway station. A bustling hub in the heart of Delhi it connects countless lives. More than just a railway station Tilak Bridge holds a piece of Delhi’s history.

Originally named Hardinge Bridge after Hardinge Avenue the station got its current name in the 1960s. Hardinge Avenue was renamed Tilak Marg honoring freedom fighter Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The name change reflects a shift in India’s identity. A move away from colonial legacy toward national pride.

Built in 1924 the station was a result of realigning railway lines. This was due to the construction of New Delhi the imperial capital. The station has witnessed massive changes. It has expanded from its original four platforms to seven. This expansion accommodates the ever-increasing number of commuters. Up to 103 trains pass through daily. The station serves as a crucial transit point for office workers and commuters. They travel to and from the central business district and surrounding areas.

Tilak Bridge isn’t just about trains. It’s a gateway to a vibrant neighborhood. Nearby are restaurants like Cafe Buddy’s and Lal Dhaba. The station also offers basic amenities. Computerised booking kiosks are available. There are also waiting areas snack booths and drinking water points. The nearest metro station is Mandi House about a kilometer away.

The station is undergoing a major upgrade. This is part of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This ambitious plan aims to modernize 554 railway stations across India. The redevelopment includes improving the station’s infrastructure. This includes the façade waiting room and parking facilities. New amenities will be added for passengers. The project is expected to cost approximately Rs 26.1 crore.
