Twelve million passengers a year. That’s how busy Tijuana International Airport really is. Imagine a place where two nations meet. A place where you can walk across a border. That’s Tijuana International Airport. Officially named General Abelardo L. Rodriguez International Airport it is more than just an airport. It’s a symbol of binational cooperation. It’s a testament to the enduring connection between San Diego and Tijuana.

Opened in 1951 Tijuana International Airport has a rich history. Its first terminal was small. It only handled a fraction of today’s passengers. Mexicana de Aviacion started flying to Mexico City from here in 1954. The airport’s location presented unique challenges. The original runway was so close to the US border. Departing planes briefly entered US airspace. Operation Intercept in 1969 aimed to stop drug smuggling. This led to a runway reorientation to avoid crossing into US airspace.

A new terminal and runway were built in 1970. It could accommodate larger planes. The new runway affected the approach to Tijuana. Cerro San Isidro a high hill was in the way. It made landings in bad weather more challenging. The original terminal became a base for the Mexican Air Force. Tijuana’s rapid growth in the 1970s demanded more airport capacity. The airport expanded.

Privatization in the 1990s modernized Tijuana International Airport. Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico took over in 1999. Concourses A and B were expanded in 2002 doubling capacity. The airport became a hub for several airlines. Aero California was one until 2006. Volaris now is the biggest operator with flights to more than 35 destinations. Viva Aerobus is another major player.

The Cross Border Xpress CBX opened in 2015. It created a physical link between the Tijuana terminal and a new one in San Diego. Passengers can walk across a bridge between countries. It changed the airport into a truly binational airport. The CBX handles roughly one-third of Tijuana International Airport’s passenger traffic. It’s a huge success.

Recently Tijuana International Airport has undergone another expansion. A new processing building has additional check-in counters. It features more security lanes and immigration facilities. It hopes to attract flights from Asia and South America. A hotel and a new bus terminal are planned. The airport has direct connections to China and even to Las Vegas.

Tijuana International Airport is more than just a gateway to Mexico. It is a unique testament to the close ties between the United States and Mexico. It’s a place where borders blur. It’s a place where cultures meet. A place where you can easily get to Mexico City. This remarkable airport connects people and cultures. It’s a dynamic and expanding airport for the future.
