Ever wondered where magnificent frigatebirds nest? Here at Tijeretas viewpoint, also called Frigatebird Hill, you’re standing in one of the few places where you can see both the Magnificent Frigatebird and the Great Frigatebird nesting in the same colony. The name “Tijeretas” itself refers to these frigate birds. Locals know them as “tijeretas” because of their scissor-like tails.

Tijeretas viewpoint sits on San Cristobal Island. From here, Shipwreck Bay unfolds to the south. Kicker Rock rises to the west. The views are simply breathtaking.

Getting here involves a short journey from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. A 45-minute hike brings you to this spot. The trail is well-pathed but rugged. Lava rocks and cacti dominate the landscape. So bring a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water because shade is scarce.

Before you started the hike to Tijeretas viewpoint, you may explored the Charles Darwin Interpretation Center. It dives deep into the human history of the Galapagos Islands. It adds a new layer of appreciation for the islands.

As you made your way up to Tijeretas viewpoint, you may found a few shaded spots among the trees. You could catch glimpses of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno and the shimmering sea below. These little lookout points were perfect for taking a break.

From the top of Tijeretas viewpoint, you get a panoramic vista. Darwin’s Cove lies below with turquoise waters. Sea turtles and sea lions lazily drift around. The endless blue ocean stretches before you. You might see a distant cruise ship or cargo vessel.

The trees below the viewpoint are bustling with activity. During the nesting season, you can glimpse fluffy baby frigate birds. Blue-footed boobies also perch on the rocky ledges.

If you have time, extend your hike beyond Tijeretas viewpoint. A dirt trail leads to Playa Baquerizo after about 45 minutes. You might find yourself on your own private beach. Marine iguanas and a few turtles may be your only companions.

Back near Tijeretas viewpoint, take the trail leading to Darwin’s Cove. It’s a popular spot for snorkeling. You can swim with sea lions, turtles, and even marine iguanas.

Instead of retracing your steps, take a sharp right turn after leaving Darwin’s Cove. This trail crosses a headland to Punta Carola. Snap a photo with the statue of Darwin. See an old World War II cannon. You will eventually reach a beautiful crescent-shaped beach. Rugged rock formations surround it. It is a perfect way to end the day.

At the foot of Tijeretas Hill is a cove. It’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling. You can often see sea lions and tropical fish here. Remember that environmental preservation is crucial. Follow all regulations and conservation recommendations during your visit.

So, as you stand here at Tijeretas viewpoint, take in the views. Observe the frigatebirds. Appreciate the unique landscape. You’re in a special place. A place where nature’s wonders unfold before your eyes. A place that connects you to the Galapagos’ unique story.
