Hidden within San Diego’s hills lies Tierrasanta Community Park a true gem. Tierrasanta itself was once part of the Mission San Diego de Alcalá ranch. This land played a significant role in San Diego’s history. The US military acquired the land in 1941 establishing Camp Elliott a Marine Corps training facility.

Tierrasanta Community Park exists today because of this history. After the Marines departed in 1944 the Navy took over. The area was deactivated in 1946. Finally in 1961 the US Government transferred ownership to the City of San Diego.

This wasn’t the end of Tierrasanta’s transformation. The area’s military past left a legacy. Unexploded ordnance remained. Tragically in 1983 two eight-year-old boys lost their lives discovering such ordnance. Extensive cleanup efforts followed. The US Army Corps of Engineers even had a role. They removed tons of ordnance and debris.

Tierrasanta Community Park reflects this history. It exists because of the redevelopment of this land. The park features lighted sports fields a large swimming pool and tennis courts. It also provides greenbelts with walking paths. These trails wind through the canyons adding to Tierrasanta’s unique character.

Remember Tierrasanta’s story is one of transformation. It’s a story of a place that overcame challenges. It’s a story of resilience and community spirit. Today Tierrasanta Community Park serves as a vibrant heart of the community. A place where people come together to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate their history. A testament to the community’s dedication. This is Tierrasanta Community Park a true testament to overcoming the past. Enjoy your visit to this special place.
