Can you imagine a place where 120 fallow deer roam freely? Welcome to Hanover’s Tiergarten. This isn’t your typical zoo. It’s a sprawling 112-hectare recreational forest. Established in 1678/79 by Duke Johan Friedrich it was designed not for timber but for hunting and the sheer beauty of wildlife.

Duke Johan Friedrich’s vision was remarkable. He prioritized the natural beauty and the animals. This approach nurtured an ancient tree population. It created a landscape of uncommon serenity. Sadly the Duke never saw his first hunt in 1680. He died the year before while traveling in Italy.

The Tiergarten isn’t just about fallow deer. In 1997 a magnificent red deer and two hinds joined the park. They now reside in the Hubertus enclosure. This area was once home to wild horses. Today a diverse array of birds and rare bats also call this place home.

It’s not just a place for animals. The Tiergarten is a place for people. Families gather here. They participate in the annual Tiergartenfest in October. Children collect acorns and chestnuts. These are used to feed the animals through winter. The Municipal Forestry Department rewards them for their efforts.

The Tiergarten is open daily from 7 am until nightfall. That changes slightly in the winter months. From early November to mid-December opening hours are different. From 12 am until nightfall Monday to Thursday. From 7 am until nightfall on weekends. Yet through every season Hanover’s Tiergarten remains a haven of tranquility and wildlife. A unique testament to Duke Johan Friedrich’s lasting vision. A place where nature and humans co-exist peacefully. A testament to a vision that continues to delight generations.
