What if animals could talk? What tales would they tell of the Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover? The Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover, affectionately known as TiHo, stands as a testament to centuries of animal care and veterinary science. Established in 1778 as the “Roßarzney-Schule” (Horse Medicine School) by George III, TiHo has evolved from humble beginnings into Germany’s oldest and only independent veterinary school. Its initial home, an old military bakery, seems a far cry from its current sprawling campus on Bischofsholer Damm. Imagine the clatter of hooves and the murmur of worried owners in those early days. The school’s first director, Johann Adam Kersting, a farrier and chief farrier, selected students without requiring prior education. Over time, the curriculum expanded, embracing subjects like cattle medicine, botany, animal diseases, and chemistry. The Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover truly blossomed under Karl Dammann’s leadership. In 1887, the school received university status, marking a pivotal moment in its history. The move to its current location in 1899 solidified its presence in the city. By 1903, the Abitur became a prerequisite for study, raising the academic bar. TiHo gained full university status with the right to grant doctorates in 1910 and habilitations in 1918. The university’s history took a somber turn in 1933, becoming a collection point for books destined for burning at the Bismarcksäule during the Nazi regime. Yet, TiHo persevered. The post-war era saw expansion and innovation. The Westfalenhof became its main headquarters in 1953. Germany’s first two-year postgraduate program began in 1969, and in 1998, TiHo became the first German university to offer the internationally recognized PhD. Today, the Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover encompasses six clinics, 18 institutes, three specialist departments, and an affiliated institute. It even extends its reach with branches in Büsum, Ruthe, and Bakum, dedicated to research and education. The TiHo isn’t just a place of healing. It’s a hub of groundbreaking research. Its focus areas include infection medicine, clinical research, systems neuroscience, and animal health and food quality. The university actively collaborates with other institutions and industries, pushing the boundaries of veterinary science. From the whispers of history echoing through its halls to the cutting-edge research conducted within its labs, the Tierärztliche Hochschule Hannover stands as a beacon of animal welfare and scientific advancement.
