“The water here whispers ancient secrets,” said Mr. Li our guide, as we stood before an unassuming spring. “This, my friends, is Tie Clam Yan, a natural spring that holds a special place in the heart of Chengdu.” He paused, letting the gentle sound of water trickling over rocks fill the air. “You see, Chengdu, with its laid-back charm and spicy cuisine, owes much of its prosperity to a marvel of ancient engineering the Dujiangyan Irrigation System. And Tie Clam Yan played a crucial, if somewhat hidden, role in its story.” He gestured towards the spring. “As the Minjiang River, the lifeblood of Chengdu, surged down from the mountains, it carried with it not just water, but also vast quantities of silt. This silt, if not managed properly, would clog the Dujiangyan channels, rendering them useless.” Mr. Li’s eyes twinkled. “Legend has it that Li Bing, the brilliant engineer behind Dujiangyan, discovered that the water from Tie Clam Yan had a peculiar property. It possessed a natural filtering ability! So, he devised a system to channel water from this very spring into the irrigation canals. This helped in reducing siltation and ensuring the Dujiangyan’s longevity.” He smiled at our awestruck faces. “So you see, this humble spring, hidden in plain sight, played a vital role in shaping the destiny of Chengdu. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity of our ancestors and their deep understanding of nature’s delicate balance.”
