Xiaozhai Tiankeng, also known as the Xiaozhai Heavenly Pit, is the world’s deepest sinkhole. It plunges a staggering 2,172 feet into the earth. This natural wonder was formed over millions of years. Underground rivers relentlessly eroded and dissolved the limestone.
Imagine a sinkhole so deep that the Empire State Building could fit inside. That is Xiaozhai Tiankeng. Inside this geological marvel, explorers have discovered unique ecosystems. There are 1,285 plant species. Rare animals like the clouded leopard and the Chinese giant salamander also reside here.
The term “Tiankeng” translates to “heavenly pit”. It is a unique regional name for sinkholes in China. These giant sinkholes have vertical walls at least 100 meters deep and 100 meters wide. The bottom is often crossed by an underground river.
Xiaozhai Tiankeng was discovered in 1994 during the China Caves Project. However, locals have known about it since ancient times. Nearby stood a small village named Xiaozhai, meaning “little village”.
The Xiaozhai Tiankeng has impressive dimensions. It is 626 meters long and 537 meters wide. Its depth ranges from 511 to 662 meters. The sinkhole is a double nested structure. The upper bowl is 320 meters deep and the lower bowl is 342 meters deep.
An underground river flows beneath the Tiankeng. This river starts in the Tianjin fissure gorge. It reaches daylight at a vertical cliff above the Migong River. There, it forms a 46-meter-high waterfall. The river is approximately 8.5 kilometers long.
The bottom of Xiaozhai Tiankeng sustains a small isolated world. It is full of life. This unique biotope hosts rare plants like ginkgo.
The creation of Tiankengs requires specific conditions. There must be a thick layer of carbonate rock. The area should have lots of rain. This leads to the formation of underground rivers.
Xiaozhai Tiankeng is a magnificent natural attraction. It attracts countless tourists. A zig-zag pathway with 2,800 steps descends into the tiankeng.
