A sprawling estate Thorntonhall it was once a simple farm. Thorntonhall grew. A grocer named Cooper bought the hall. He improved it greatly. He had shops across western Scotland. Another grand house Ravenscroft appeared. It sat on a small hilltop. These buildings and the railway station spurred a plan. A mini-Edinburgh suburb of crescents and avenues was envisioned. World War I stopped the construction. Only three houses were finished.
Thorntonhall played a vital role during World War II. It was one of several sites chosen to relocate government departments. This was to avoid bombing raids. After the war Thorntonhall became part of East Kilbride New Town. Many individual houses were built. The village’s relative isolation attracted an upper-class housing development. This lasted from 1970 to 2000.
Bowmore Crescent in Thorntonhall became known for something. It had some of the highest average house prices in Scotland. In 2011 an average house cost £908000. Thorntonhall is today affluent. The village boasts a country club. It has catering facilities a dining room and a members’ lounge. Thorntonhall is well-connected. The A727 bypasses the village. Thorntonhall railway station provides hourly services. These go to East Kilbride and Glasgow Central.
Many notable people have lived in Thorntonhall. Andy Cameron and Fred MacAulay comedians lived there. Peter Lawwell Celtic’s chief executive was a resident. Peter Løvenkrands a former Rangers footballer and coach also lived there. Aiden McGeady footballer Michelle Mone founder of Ultimo and Chris Sutton footballer all called Thorntonhall home. Kira Eggers a Danish former model also lived in Thorntonhall. Thorntonhall a village with a rich past a vibrant present and a promising future. Thorntonhall remains a desirable place to live.
