Picture a roaring crowd a sea of red and yellow under the stadium lights. This is Thong Nhat Stadium. A place pulsating with history. A place where the echoes of cheers and anxieties still linger.

Thong Nhat Stadium is more than just a sports venue. It’s a living testament to Ho Chi Minh City’s vibrant past. Initially named Renault Field after Philippe Oreste Renault it opened on October 18 1931. A simple 20-step stand a far cry from the stadium we see today.

Imagine that first match Cho Lon Police versus Gia Dinh Stars. A 1-0 victory for Cho Lon. The beginning of countless matches celebrations and even tragedies. Between 1959 and 1960 the stadium underwent its first major expansion. New stands were added. A lighting system was installed. Its name changed to Cong Hoa Stadium. The capacity swelled to 30000.

The years between 1955 and 1975 were tumultuous. Thong Nhat Stadium witnessed huge crowds. Over 30000 packed in for a crucial match between South Vietnam and South Korea. It even hosted the Merdeka Cup trophy in 1966. Sadly the war cast a shadow. A Vietcong attack in 1965 claimed 11 lives. The stadium’s history is intertwined with the city’s.

After the reunification on September 2 1975 the stadium received its current name Thong Nhat meaning Reunification Stadium. It has since been the home ground for Ho Chi Minh City FC. The Vietnam national football team also played several matches there. The stadium hosted numerous prestigious events. The 1998 AFF Championship. The 2003 Southeast Asian Games. Even the 2008 AFC Women’s Asian Cup.

Thong Nhat Stadium has seen many renovations. In 2002 it was prepared for the 2003 Southeast Asian Games. Further upgrades happened in 2005-2007 and 2017-2019. The capacity has fluctuated over the years. Currently it sits at approximately 14400. But plans are underway for more renovations to increase the capacity to 19000 for the 2026 Vietnam National Games.

Today as you stand here you can almost feel the energy of past matches. The cheers the groans the tension. Thong Nhat Stadium isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a story waiting to be told a legacy etched in the very ground you stand on. A legacy of sport war and the enduring spirit of Ho Chi Minh City.
