What secrets does Thompson Island hold? Just a short distance from Boston’s Long Wharf, yet a world away, lies Thompson Island. This 170-acre island, nestled in Dorchester Bay, offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and rich history. Thompson Island isn’t just a scenic escape. It’s a living testament to Boston’s evolving story, from its indigenous roots to its role in shaping American education. Before European contact, Native Americans frequented Thompson Island, leaving behind artifacts that whisper of their presence. In 1621, Miles Standish, of Plymouth Colony fame, set foot on the island, naming it “Island Trevoyre.” Just five years later, David Thompson established a trading post, forever linking his name to the island. Thompson Island transitioned from a trading hub to a pastoral landscape. British forces occupied it during the Siege of Boston, only to be ousted by colonial forces who burned everything in their wake. A new chapter began in 1833 with the establishment of the Boston Farm School for at-risk boys. This innovative institution, later merging with the Boston Asylum for Indigent Boys, offered a home and education to countless young men. Imagine the boys traveling between the island and Kelly’s Landing in South Boston aboard the “Pilgrim III” and “Pilgrim IV”. These journeys weren’t always smooth; two tragic boating accidents claimed the lives of students and faculty, forever etching a somber note in the island’s history. Thompson Island’s educational legacy continued to evolve. In 1956, the school transformed into Thompson Academy, a college preparatory boarding school. It fostered community integration during turbulent times. Sadly, a fire in 1971 marked the beginning of the end for the academy, which closed its doors in 1975. The island found new purpose in 1988 with the arrival of Outward Bound. Thompson Island Outward Bound Education Center continues to inspire teamwork and self-confidence. In a nod to its evolving identity, the organization received a generous donation in 2024 and was renamed Cathleen Stone Island Outward Bound School. Even the island itself is proposed to bear the name Cathleen Stone Island, pending official approval. Thompson Island remains a place of transformation, a place where history and nature intertwine to offer unique experiences.
