Ever wondered about the story behind that striking church on Mariannenplatz? That is the Thomaskirche. It stands as a testament to Berlin’s resilience. Let’s step back in time and uncover its secrets.

Thomaskirche was designed by Friedrich Adler. He built it between 1865 and 1869. Imagine Berlin in those days. The city was rapidly growing. A grand church was needed to serve the burgeoning population.

Adler’s vision was a church in the shape of a Latin cross. Two towers grace its facade. A 56-meter-high dome rises majestically above. The Thomaskirche quickly became a landmark.

Before the Berliner Dom was built, Thomaskirche was the largest church in Berlin. It held around 3,000 seats. Its congregation was one of the largest in Western Christendom. Think of the energy and devotion that filled this space.

But the 20th century brought immense challenges. On November 22, 1942, aerial bombardment struck the Thomaskirche. The eastern gallery and choir windows were completely destroyed. Much of the interior was lost. Imagine the devastation.

After the war, the city lay in ruins. Reconstruction was a slow and arduous process. Between 1956 and 1963, Werner Retzlaff and Ludolf von Walthausen led the effort to rebuild Thomaskirche. The exterior was reconstructed according to historical templates. However, the interior underwent significant changes. The architects chose a more modern design.

Before its destruction, the Thomaskirche had a magnificent organ. It was built by Wilhelm Sauer between 1868 and 1869. This organ had mechanical cone valves and 52 stops. During World War I, the prospect pipes were removed for war purposes. In 1932, the organ was rebuilt with electro-pneumatic cone valves. The devastation of 1944 damaged the organ beyond repair.

Today, two organs fill the Thomaskirche with music. The main organ was built in 1970. Rudolf von Beckerath built it. It has mechanical action and electrical registration. A smaller chancel organ adds to the musical richness.

The Thomaskirche stands directly between the Luisenstädtischer Kanal and Mariannenplatz. It was once a central location. Now it remains an important landmark in Berlin’s vibrant Kreuzberg district. The area around the Thomaskirche has changed dramatically over the years. Yet, this church has remained a constant presence.

The story of Thomaskirche is one of faith, destruction, and renewal. It embodies the spirit of Berlin. It is a city that has overcome incredible adversity. As you stand here today, take a moment to appreciate its enduring beauty and historical significance.
