Who could have imagined this quiet waterfront spot was once a bustling hub of athletic activity? The Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, nestled near Newark Bay, has seen its fair share of triumphs and transformations. Originally opened in 1976 as the Tidelands Athletic Complex, this place has evolved from a simple playing field to a multi-sport facility. Thomas M. Gerrity, the athletic director of then-Jersey City State College, was instrumental in acquiring and developing this land. The complex stands near where the historic Roosevelt Stadium once graced the Jersey City skyline. Gerrity’s vision brought this complex to life, a legacy honored when the complex was renamed in his memory in 1995. He’s even a charter member of the NJCU Athletic Hall of Fame. Today, the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex is a vibrant home for NJCU’s soccer, baseball, and softball teams. The centerpiece is a 3,000-seat multi-sport stadium. Imagine cheering from the chair back seats near midfield, enjoying an unobstructed view of the game. The press box offers a prime vantage point, one of the best in the region. The main field, once a football field, has been rededicated as The Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. Three fields cater to the soccer teams: the main stadium field, the baseball outfield (previously McNulty Field), and a smaller practice field near Newark Bay. This smaller field allows for focused technical training. Technological advancements have also enhanced the complex. A state-of-the-art wireless scoreboard and public address system keep the crowd engaged. The teams benefit from Kwik Goal benches, added in 2012, and protective capping along the sidelines. Beyond soccer, the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex boasts a baseball diamond with bleacher seating, dugouts, and its own press box. The softball field, nestled in the northeastern corner, features its own dugouts, bleachers, and a meticulously maintained field. And what’s a game without refreshments? A brand-new concession stand offers spectators a variety of snacks and drinks. Even with all these amenities, the complex maintains a few simple rules. For the safety of all, pets aren’t allowed at athletic events. So, next time you’re at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex, take a moment to appreciate its rich history. From its humble beginnings as Tidelands to its current state-of-the-art facilities, this complex stands as a testament to Gerrity’s vision and the enduring spirit of athletic competition.
