Here on Capel Street, we stand before the Thomas Dudley Mural. It commemorates one of Dublin’s most beloved street characters. Thomas Dudley, born in 1906, was better known as “Bang Bang”.
Dudley faced a tough start. He grew up in an orphanage and had blindness in one eye. Despite these challenges, he possessed a charismatic personality.
In the mid-20th century, Bang Bang became a familiar sight. Imagine him riding Dublin’s buses and trams. He carried a large church key. With a playful gleam in his good eye, he’d point the key like a gun. Then he would shout “Bang Bang!” at people.
The Thomas Dudley Mural captures this essence. It reminds us of his unique presence. The mural is relatively recent, so it is assumed. The chair chained to the railings is relatively new, too.
Dudley’s antics brought laughter to Dubliners. He transformed the ordinary into something fun. “Bang Bang” became his calling card. It echoed his playful spirit.
