In 1869, a determined entrepreneur named Thomas Coar Dixon arrived in Brisbane. He carried with him the tools and dreams of a tanner and bootmaker. This is the story of the Thomas Dixon Centre. Dixon established his first tannery in West End. He later expanded it to include boot and shoe manufacturing. His business thrived. By 1908, he commissioned architect Richard Gailey to design a grand new factory. The Thomas Dixon Centre was born. Dixon proudly declared, “This building will be here when I and my sons have long passed, as a monument of pluck and indomitable perseverance.” He was right. The Thomas Dixon Centre has stood the test of time. It has witnessed Brisbane’s transformation from a burgeoning industrial hub to a modern metropolis. The original building, a testament to Georgian Revival architecture, is constructed of striking red brick. It featured innovative asbestos-cement slate roofing, a novelty at the time. The building housed the entire Dixon operation, from offices and storerooms to workshops filled with the rhythmic clatter of machinery. After Dixon’s passing in 1909, his sons carried on the family business. The Thomas Dixon Centre continued to hum with activity. The site expanded to include a store for wooden lasts and, during World War II, an air raid shelter. The building’s journey took a new turn in 1975. The Queensland Government purchased it. It served as a storage space until 1991. Then, it underwent a significant renovation to become the home of the Queensland Ballet and the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra. Today, the Thomas Dixon Centre continues to evolve. It has undergone a transformational redevelopment, blending its heritage with modern facilities. Now a vibrant cultural hub, it houses six dance studios, including a community studio. It also has a 350+ seat theatre, the Talbot Theatre. There are dedicated spaces for dancers and artists. A café and bar are open to the public. The Thomas Dixon Centre isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where creativity flourishes and stories are shared. From boots to ballet, the Thomas Dixon Centre’s journey reflects the spirit of Brisbane itself. It’s a story of perseverance, adaptation, and a commitment to enriching lives through the arts.
