The dedication happened on October 21 1929. City officials persuaded Thomas Alva Edison and President Herbert Hoover to attend the dedication.
Interestingly the fountain is a recycled one. Its original purpose and prior location remain unknown. Despite its mysterious past Allied Electrical Instruments donated $25000. This generous contribution facilitated the fountain’s purchase and relocation.
Thomas Edison’s connection to Michigan runs deep. Though born in Ohio in 1847 his family soon moved to Port Huron. As a young man Edison worked on the Grand Trunk Western trains. He sold newspapers between Detroit and Port Huron. His entrepreneurial spirit shone even then. Edison had an interest in science and experiments. He was fired from his train job for setting a baggage car on fire during a chemistry experiment. This happened in Smith’s Creek Michigan.
But here’s a lesser-known tale. As a teenager Edison rescued a child from an oncoming train in Mount Clemens. The grateful station agent father taught Edison telegraphy. By 19 Edison worked as a telegrapher for the Grand Trunk Railroad in Ontario. Many early inventions were somehow related to telegraphy such as the stock ticker.
