Once, this sacred ground housed a Christian church. In the 1980s, it transformed into a Taoist temple. With unwavering dedication, the community built a larger temple next door. The new Thien Hau Temple was completed in September 2005. It was officially dedicated on March 25, 2006.
The Camau Association of America operates the Thien Hau Temple. This local group supports Vietnamese refugees from Camau Province. The temple also welcomes support from other East Asian communities.
The Thien Hau Temple comes alive before and after Chinese New Year. A month before, people give thanks. They burn incense. They offer roast pig, fruit, and flowers. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, blessings are given. Incense fills the air. Lion dancers perform. Firecrackers pop to ward off evil spirits. For weeks after, people seek blessings for the new year.
Mazu’s birthday on March 23 of the Lunar Calendar is a grand celebration. Believers travel from around the world. Expect firecrackers and lion dances. There is opera and martial arts displays. Food is shared with everyone. Birthdays of Guan Yu and Fu De are also celebrated.
