Founded in 1957 the First Thessalonian Baptist Church began as a small prayer band. Rev W H Waldon Jr and a few others met in his home on Joyland Place. This humble beginning grew. It became a mission. Soon this mission outgrew the small space. The group decided to organize as a church. In March 1958 the First Thessalonian Baptist Church was officially formed. Rev Waldon Jr gave the church its name.
The church found a home at 928 West Fair Street. They had a charter a pastor members and a deacon Walter Harris. This marked a significant step in the church’s growth. The congregation continued to flourish. In 1967 a move to a larger space at 637 Joseph E Boone Blvd became necessary. This location is where the First Thessalonian Baptist Church stands today. This move reflected the church’s expanding influence and membership.
The First Thessalonian Baptist Church has had three pastors. Rev W H Waldon Jr was the founder. Rev George A Jennings also served. Currently Rev Leroy Wright leads the congregation. The church has seen substantial spiritual progress. Bible study and Sunday school thrive. The youth department is growing. The youth and senior choirs uplift the congregation with their songs.
Over the years many devoted deacons have supported the church. Walter Harris was the first. Others included Rev Will Arnold Houston C Denton Felton Billings Ulysses Hillman Joe Gibson Jimmie Hunter Ray Floyd Leon Lewis Johnny Parham George Jennings Alfred Childs Carliss Robinson Anthony Billings and Wendell Wyckoff. Clarence Moore Sr and Johnnie Jackson currently serve as deacons. The church also formed a Junior Deacons Board in 1993 and a Mini Deacons Board in 1996. These boards showcase the church’s commitment to nurturing its younger members.
