What if a bridge became a symbol of enduring love and tragic loss? That is the story of the Thepsrisin Bridge. It stands as a testament to both human connection and the challenges life throws our way.

Thepsrisin Bridge, originally named Sarasin Bridge, was Phuket’s first link to mainland Thailand. It connected Phuket Island to Phang Nga Province. Imagine a time when ferries were the only way to cross. This 700-meter bridge changed everything in 1967. It was named after the Sarasin family. They were influential in Thai business and politics since the 19th century.

As tourism boomed, a new bridge became necessary. Thepkasattri Bridge was completed in 2011. Thepsrisin Bridge then became a pedestrian attraction. It is now a place to stroll and enjoy sea breezes.

Thepsrisin Bridge is more than just a crossing. Locals gather here in the evenings. Saphan Sarasin, as it is known in Thai, offers stunning views. The central part features two towers with a platform. From here, you can see the Andaman Sea to the west. You can also see Phang Nga Bay to the east. Ornate lamps line the walkway, creating a beautiful scene at dusk.

After 6 p.m., anglers arrive with stools, rods, and lamps. They hope to catch fish and squid. On the Phuket side, vendors sell Thai snacks and drinks. You can find barbecued squid, chicken satay, fruit, soft drinks, and beer here.

At the foot of Thepsrisin Bridge on the Phang Nga side sits Thanoon Seafood Restaurant. This open-air eatery is near the beach. Nearby, shops sell dried fish, souvenirs, and beach toys.

Thepsrisin Bridge has a tragic history. In 1973, it was the site of a double suicide. A local bus driver named Khun Dam loved his sweetheart Gew. Her rich parents disapproved of the relationship. They wanted her to marry a richer man. Gew’s father forbade her from seeing Dam. The couple decided they could only be together in death. They tied themselves together and jumped from Thepsrisin Bridge. Their bodies were found locked in a final embrace.

Today, Thepsrisin Bridge offers spectacular views and a chance to reflect. Visit the street market on the Phang Nga side. Find a variety of foods and souvenirs. Relax at Thanoon Seafood Restaurant. Enjoy the sunset with a cold drink.

Thepsrisin Bridge offers much more than meets the eye. It is a place of history, love stories, markets, and restaurants. It’s a gateway to Phuket’s marinas. It offers stunning views. Remember your cameras. You will want to capture the beauty and the stories of Thepsrisin Bridge.
