What secrets lie beneath our feet? This is the Theodor Richtschacht. It is a significant piece of Freiberg’s mining history. The Theodor Richtschacht whispers tales of innovation. It also tells of resilience. Originally known as Rothgrubner Richtschacht, its name evolved. It adapted to modern language.
Theodor Richter significantly contributed to Freiberg’s mining legacy. He co-discovered indium in 1863. Richter’s work at the Freiberg University of Mining and Technology was groundbreaking. He shares this honor with Ferdinand Reich.
Theodor Richtschacht played a vital role in the Rothschönberger Stolln’s development in the 19th century. Around 1837, the Rothgrübner Schacht stood outside Freiberg. It was near the Erbischen Tor. It was also close to a disused cemetery.
In 1848, the shaft’s deepening commenced. By 1856, it reached the Rothschönberger Stolln at 212 meters. It facilitated the advancement of this crucial water drainage tunnel. Parts of the Rothschönberger Stolln were driven from the Rote Grube shaft. This required efficient material transport and water management.
The Alte Tiefe Fürstenstolln, established in 1348, historically drained the mining area. This included the Rote Grube. It was approximately 82 meters deep. It channeled substantial water volumes into the Muldental near Tuttendorf.
Around 1855, a new frame house with a crew room was constructed at the Rothgruber Richtschacht. The three-story building was 22 Ellen long, 20 Ellen deep, and 21 Ellen high. Its construction cost 2,501 Thlr. 1 Ngr. 6 Pf.
In 1862, a separating bank was added for ore processing. It was connected to the Richtschacht building by an 18-Lachter railway. The entire construction cost 821 Thaler.
Around 1880, the Rothgruber Richtschacht was deepened to 258 meters. This aimed to extract ore below the Rothschönberger Stolln. Erz extraction ceased with the Himmelfahrt Fundgrube in 1913.
During World War II, the Rote Grube served military purposes. A tunnel was driven towards Wernerplatz at 45 meters. It became an air-raid shelter. A section towards the train station housed a telephone exchange for the German Reich.
In 1944, a bombing raid destroyed the Rote Grube’s frame house. After the war, in the 1950s, a new shaft house was constructed. A steel headframe was added.
The Rote Grube became part of a planned network. It was intended to be a large teaching, research, and visitor mine. The Himmelfahrtfundgrube only partially realized this vision.
Until the end of the German Democratic Republic era, the Rote Grube Schacht retained its waterwheel. It also had rope carts and surge water equipment. Despite its value, restoration efforts stalled.
