Amidst the tranquil neighborhood of Mahlsdorf, stands the Theodor-Fliedner-Heim. It’s a place where architectural charm meets spiritual solace. The Theodor-Fliedner-Heim isn’t your typical church building. It’s a captivating blend of homey charm and sacred space. Designed by Otto Risse, this architectural gem showcases the Heimatschutzarchitektur style. Theodor-Fliedner-Heim was built between 1936 and 1937. It served as a beacon of faith for the growing community of Mahlsdorf-Süd. The original village church was too far for residents. So the community decided a local center was needed. The Theodor-Fliedner-Heim filled this void. It provided a place for worship and community gatherings. The complex consists of two low-rise wings. One houses the church hall, the other, living quarters. These wings meet at a right angle, creating a unique courtyard. At this intersection, a two-story open bell tower rises. Its square base and pointed arch openings add to the architectural charm. The tower is topped with an octagonal, recessed spire, a striking feature against the sky. The Theodor-Fliedner-Heim’s design reflects practicality and cost-effectiveness. The exterior walls are unplastered brick, showcasing the natural beauty of the materials. The corners are reinforced with sturdy fieldstones, adding a touch of rustic elegance. Large arched windows grace the church hall, allowing natural light to flood the space. The entrance is located within the open ground floor of the bell tower, welcoming visitors into its embrace. The church hall itself can accommodate 200 people. It features a gently curved barrel-vaulted ceiling, creating a sense of intimacy and grandeur. The altar area is flanked by a two-room sacristy, providing a dedicated space for preparations. Otto Risse’s attention to detail extends to the interior. He designed the altar, lectern, and baptismal font, ensuring a harmonious blend of form and function. The Theodor-Fliedner-Heim’s original organ was replaced in 2012 with a new one. This Italian-inspired instrument boasts two manuals, a pedal, and 17 registers, filling the hall with rich, resonant melodies. The bell tower houses two bronze bells, cast in 2019. These replaced earlier iron bells, ensuring that the call to worship continues to resonate throughout the community. The Theodor-Fliedner-Heim stands as a testament to community spirit and architectural ingenuity. It’s a place where history, faith, and architectural beauty intertwine, creating a truly special experience for all who visit.
