Whispers of rebellion echo from these very grounds. Theatricum Botanicum isn’t just a theater. It’s a legacy etched into the hills of Topanga Canyon. Founded in 1973 by the legendary Will Geer this outdoor amphitheater pulsates with history.

Will Geer a renowned actor faced Hollywood’s blacklist for refusing to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. Unable to work in Hollywood he moved to Topanga Canyon. There he began a new chapter selling produce and creating a haven for blacklisted actors and folk singers. Woody Guthrie even lived in a small shack on the property.

Geer’s resilience blossomed into Theatricum Botanicum. The name itself a tribute to John Parkinson’s 1640 herbal Theatrum Botanicum. This wasn’t merely a theater it was a reflection of Geer’s dual passions acting and botany. He ensured every plant mentioned in Shakespeare’s works was grown here.

After Geer’s death in 1978 his family took the reins. They transformed Theatricum Botanicum into a professional repertory theater. They built a 299-seat amphitheater. They even used salvaged planks from the 1983 Santa Monica Pier collapse.

Theatricum Botanicum thrives today. It showcases Shakespearean plays modern works and concerts. It continues the tradition of artistic expression and social justice. The ashes of Will Geer and his wife Herta Ware rest here. A bust of Geer stands as a permanent reminder. This isn’t just a theater. It’s a living testament to courage creativity and community. It’s a place where history whispers secrets of resilience and art. A place where the spirit of Will Geer still thrives.
