Hidden behind an unassuming facade, the Théâtre Mercelis – Mercelistheater whispers tales of a vibrant past. Did you know this building, nestled between Avenue Louise and Place Fernand Cocq, started its life not as a theatre, but as a hub of social activity? Built in the early 20th century, the Théâtre Mercelis first housed a café and billiard room on its ground floor, while a small theatre tucked away at the back hosted conferences, amateur performances, and even electoral meetings. The spirit of entertainment infused these walls from the very beginning. The Théâtre Mercelis also bore witness to a unique moment in artistic history. In the 1920s, the Surrealist group “Correspondance” chose this venue for a groundbreaking performance titled “Le Dessous des cartes” (“The Underside of the Cards”). Imagine a fusion of sketches, music, songs, and dances, all crafted with a Dadaist sensibility and a deliberate disregard for traditional theatrical norms. Composer André Souris described the performance as a chaotic tapestry of clichés, music that veered from traditional quadrilles to avant-garde jazz, culminating in a joyous improvisation abruptly halted by the fall of the curtain. In the 1930s, the commune of Ixelles began renting space within the building. After World War II, the Théâtre Mercelis officially became communal property. In 1953, the building underwent extensive renovations. Architect Armand Poppe transformed both the interior and exterior, giving the Théâtre Mercelis the traditionalist style we see today. The renovations extended beyond aesthetics, ensuring the theatre remained a vital cultural space. The seating capacity increased to 178 in 2017, and the technical facilities were modernized for a better experience for both performers and audiences. The Théâtre Mercelis continues to offer a diverse program of cultural events, from theatre performances to concerts and conferences. It’s a testament to the enduring power of art and community, a place where history whispers from the wings and the stage is always set for new stories.
