A fever dream of passion and slightly mad dreams. That’s how the Théâtre Le Public began. Right here on Rue Braemt.

In 1994 Patricia Ide and Michel Kacenelenbogen transformed old Aerts breweries into a vibrant theater. Their friend Luc D’Haenens an architect and set designer helped. It was a bold move fueled by personal funds. Yet within a few seasons the Théâtre Le Public became a melting pot of theatrical styles.

They aimed for a popular and unifying creative theater. The Théâtre Le Public presented both contemporary works and classics. Belgian artists actors and writers were always featured. By 2002 the government recognized its unique character and provided funding.

What started as one room grew to three. Seasonal programs expanded. The theater hosted numerous creations collaborations and co-productions. Belgian and international companies participated. This diversity continued despite the passage of time and challenges. The founders’ passion and dreams persisted.

For nearly 30 years they’ve sought out artists who challenged them. They tell stories that challenge audiences. They maintain relationships with established artists but remain open to new encounters. This commitment to diverse theatrical aesthetics continues. The Théâtre Le Public strives to be open to everyone.

Each season’s programming is a delicate balance. It blends smiles and thought provoking themes. It mixes bold statements and poignant moments. It dares to question and grapple with our inner demons. It combines the light and the heavy. Above all in these uncertain times the Théâtre Le Public finds ways to tell stories that open us to a shared future. The Théâtre Le Public’s story is one of continuous evolution a testament to its enduring spirit and its commitment to art.
