“A true choral work Une fin is a tour de force” These words from a critic resonate even today. They speak of the power and artistry found within the walls of the Thu00e9u00e2tre d’aujourd’hui.

This isn’t just any theatre. It’s a cornerstone of Quebec’s cultural identity. Since 1968 the Thu00e9u00e2tre d’aujourd’hui has championed Quebec and Canadian playwrights in French. More than 300 productions have graced its stage. Over 30000 spectators attend each season.

Initially housed in a small space on Papineau Street the theatre found a new home on St-Denis Street in 1991. This move marked a significant expansion. The new building boasts a main hall. It can hold up to 275 people. A smaller more intimate space exists too. It’s named after Jean-Claude Germain a pivotal figure in the theatre’s history.

Germain himself along with his troupe Les Enfants de Chu00e9nier helped define the theatre’s mission in 1969. That mission was to showcase Quebec’s dramatic works. Under his direction and later that of others such as Michelle Rossignol the Thu00e9u00e2tre d’aujourd’hui launched the careers of many prominent playwrights. Michel Marc Bouchard Renu00e9 Richard Cyr and many more found their voices here.

The Thu00e9u00e2tre d’aujourd’hui is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the vibrant creativity of Quebec. It’s a place where stories are born. They live and breathe on stage. It continues to evolve its artistic vision under the direction of Sylvain Bu00e9langer and u00c9tienne Langlois. The recent renovations to its hall further solidified its commitment to both artistic excellence and community. Even the building’s exterior reflects this commitment. The striking sculpture Les enjeux by Michel Goulet and the modern marquise Aujourd’hui by Dominique Blain are stunning examples of the one percent artistic rule in action. They stand as silent guardians watching over the theatrical magic within.

The Thu00e9u00e2tre d’aujourd’hui continues to thrive. It stands as a beacon of artistic innovation. It stands proudly. It is a vital part of Montreal’s cultural landscape. This is a place where you can truly experience the pulse of Quebec theatre. A place where every performance is a celebration of storytelling.
