Did you hear that creaking? It’s the Theaterschiff, whispering stories of a century on the waves. This isn’t just any theater. It’s Europe’s only seaworthy stage, a floating marvel right here in Hamburg’s Nikolaifleet. The Theaterschiff, originally christened “Seemöve” (Seagull), was born in 1912 in a Dutch shipyard. Imagine a sleek, white, 20-meter-long Besan Ewer, sailing the open waters. It was purchased by Jürgen Schröder for a hefty 14,500 Goldmark. The Theaterschiff’s journey wasn’t always smooth sailing. During World War II, it suffered a devastating blow, sinking in Hamburg’s harbor after a bomb attack. But like a true star, it rose again, salvaged and repaired. Over the years, it grew in size and stature, transforming into a coastal motor ship. In 1974, the ship, no longer economically viable for shipping, embarked on a new adventure. Christa and Eberhard Möbius purchased it. They envisioned a different kind of voyage, one of laughter, drama, and artistic expression. The Möbius’s transformed the vessel at the “Garbers” shipyard in Rothenburgsort. They meticulously crafted it into a unique theater space. The Theaterschiff opened its doors, or rather, its gangplank, on October 13, 1975. Its stage, nestled within the converted cargo hold, has welcomed a dazzling array of talent. From renowned actors like Gert Fröbe and Heinz Reincke to international stars like Helmut Qualtinger and Senta Berger, the Theaterschiff has hosted performances that resonate with audiences to this day. Even today, under the management of the Schlesselmann family and artistic director Michael Frowin, the Theaterschiff thrives. It continues to present a diverse program of satire, cabaret, comedy, and shows. Its 120 seats, arranged on three sides of the stage, offer an intimate and immersive experience. The Theaterschiff doesn’t just stay put. It still sails, taking its shows on tour to ports around Hamburg and even as far as the Kieler Woche and Helgoland. In 2020, this grand old lady of the stage underwent extensive renovations. Thanks to donations, the Hamburg Renovation Fund, and federal funds, it emerged refreshed and ready to entertain. So, the next time you’re in Hamburg, listen for the gentle creaking of the Theaterschiff. It’s a call to step aboard and experience a piece of Hamburg’s vibrant history.
