Ahoy there fellow adventurers Have you ever felt the creak of a ship’s hull beneath your feet? The Theaterschiff Batavia invites you to do just that.

This isn’t just any vessel. This is a floating theatre a vibrant piece of Hamburg’s history. Originally built in 1892 in Stettin as the Flusskanonenboot Vaterland for the Kaiserliche Marine it served in Tsingtau China. After years of voyages and battles the Batavia found itself in Hamburg in 1943. A direct hit from an English bomb sent it to the bottom of the Elbe River.

Don’t worry though the Batavia survived. In 1952 it was raised and used by a rowing club. Then in 1972 Hannes Grabau purchased the ship renaming it Batavia after the former capital of Indonesia. Two years later it was transformed into the magnificent Theaterschiff we see today.

Thousands of events have graced its stage. Famous and lesser-known artists have performed here. Imagine Helga Feddersen Marius Müller-Westernhagen even Günter Grass captivating audiences on this unique stage. The ship is truly a cultural landmark.

The upper deck houses a restaurant. The lower deck is home to the intimate theatre. Legend has it that a ship’s rat named Fritz resides in the bilge. No one has ever seen him though.

So step aboard the Theaterschiff Batavia. Experience a unique blend of history culture and entertainment. This isn’t just a show it’s a journey through time. A journey on the legendary Batavia. Let the magic of the ship enchant you.
