“Waiting for Godot” a groundbreaking play. That’s how Theater Sanwoollim’s story began. Right here in Seoul.

In 1969 a small group of passionate artists staged Samuel Beckett’s masterpiece. This marked the birth of the Sanwoolim Theater Company. It was the first time this Nobel Prize-winning play was performed in Korea. The director Lim Young-woong and the actors formed a company. They shared a vision: creating compelling and thought-provoking theater.

Sanwoolim Theater Company flourished. Over six decades they produced over sixty productions. They received over eighty awards. They became a leading theater group in Korea. Their productions ranged from classic plays to experimental works. They were known for innovative interpretations and high-quality performances. Theater Sanwoollim became their permanent home.

In March 1985 a new chapter unfolded. Lim Young-woong and his wife Oh Jeung-ja funded the construction of a dedicated theater building. Near Hongik University it stands as a testament to their devotion to the arts. The building was designed specifically for theater use. It has three floors and two basement levels. No other purposes were allowed. It’s a unique space. It is the only drama group in Korea to have its own exclusive theater.
