The area that is now The Woodlands was once home to the Akokisa and Bidai peoples. They relied on Spring Creek for fresh water. Construction near the creek uncovered Bidai artifacts in 1984.
Mitchell’s original plan was for Houston to annex The Woodlands. However, that idea didn’t gain support. Some residents organized to prevent annexation. In 2021, residents voted against incorporation. The Woodlands remains a township.
The Woodlands has attracted many corporations. Notable companies with a presence here include Occidental Petroleum Corporation and Chevron Phillips Chemical. Huntsman Corporation and Woodforest National Bank also have offices here.
