Is it the wind or music I hear? Welcome to John Luther Adams’ The Wind Garden. This unique installation at UC San Diego invites us to listen deeply. It is more than just a collection of trees. It’s a symphony played by nature.

The Wind Garden is located in the UCSD Theater District. It occupies a eucalyptus grove near the Mandell Weiss Theater. Adams created this musical composition to blend seamlessly with the landscape.

Step onto the central pathway. You will notice a soft atmosphere of sound. It is almost like bells voices and strings. The sounds seem to waft through the grove. The movement of the trees makes it hard to pinpoint where the music comes from.

There are no pre-recorded elements here. The Wind Garden has no data streams from elsewhere. Everything you hear is driven by the wind and light. This happens in real time. Each visit to The Wind Garden offers a unique experience.

John Luther Adams is deeply rooted in the natural world. Alex Ross of The New Yorker called him one of the most original musical thinkers. Adams studied composition with James Tenney. He also served as executive director of the Northern Alaska Environmental Center.

Adams won a Pulitzer Prize for Music and a Grammy Award for his Become Ocean. Columbia University honored him with the William Schuman Award for Lifetime Achievement. Northwestern University gave him the Nemmers Prize. This was for melding the physical and musical worlds.

Hidden among the trees are 32 small loudspeakers. Accelerometers are attached to the highest branches. They measure the movement of the trees in the wind. As the wind’s velocity changes the sound’s amplitude changes too.

The musical foundation is two choirs of virtual voices. There is a day choir tuned to the natural harmonic series. A night choir is tuned to the sub-harmonic series. As darkness deepens the night choir’s sounds fall in pitch. They become darker. When daylight returns the night choir fades.

In early morning and around sunset both choirs are equally present. This produces especially rich harmonic colors. The rising and falling of these choirs traces the sun’s movement. This happens above below and around the horizon throughout the year.

In midday the sounds are high and bright. At night they are lower and darker. On overcast days all sounds are subdued. Summer sounds are brighter than winter sounds. Throughout the day the sounds rise and fall with the wind.

The permanent installation took place in 2016. Since then the work has been extensively tuned. Natural movement of tree limbs becomes harmonic sound. This happens through the interface of the Max/MSP patch. Miller Puckette a UC San Diego music professor originally developed this visual programming language.

The Wind Garden invites you to listen deeply. Experience the music of this place. There are no prerecorded elements. Everything is driven by the conditions on site in real time. It is always on and never repeats itself.

Many visitors marvel at the Zen-like experience. They sit and listen to this unique sound. The harmonics invite awareness. You will notice traffic noise rustling leaves birds singing and other people. It’s difficult to leave. You’ll always wonder what is coming next.
