Picture this a sprawling urban oasis unexpectedly nestled in the heart of Johannesburg. This is The Wilds Nature Reserve. A haven of indigenous vegetation clinging to the sides of rocky koppies. The Wilds offers stunning views of Johannesburg its suburbs.

In 1924 the Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company gifted this land to the city. The condition was simple the land must remain in its natural state and open to the public. The land was deemed too steep for development. After the 1937 Empire Exhibition plants from a rockery were relocated to this site. The Wilds opened in 1938 boasting lawns ponds and waterfalls. Paths were laid out in stone.

The Wilds faced challenges. In the 1990s it gained a reputation for being dangerous and crime ridden. Residents avoided it. It became a well known no-go area. However a rejuvenation began. Volunteers and local residents like TJ de Klerk led initiatives. They fenced off areas and improved security. Crime decreased significantly.

Artist James Delaney played a significant role. Starting in 2012 he cleared overgrown areas improving sightlines. He created striking laser cut animal artworks. His Owl Forest a collection of 67 owls is a notable feature. These brighten the park and draw visitors. These vibrant works of art celebrate the park’s natural beauty.

The Wilds is more than a park. It’s a national monument declared in 1981. It’s a conservation area since 2006. It has received awards for its rejuvenation. Community involvement continues. Guided walks and yoga sessions are regularly held. The Wilds showcases the power of community action and revitalization. It demonstrates the resilience of nature within an urban landscape.

Today The Wilds thrives. It’s a vibrant space where people gather. Walk its over 8 kilometres of stone pathways. Admire the indigenous flora and fauna. The Wilds remains a testament to the beauty that can be found even in the most unexpected places.
