Could you imagine Johor Bahru without the Church of the Immaculate Conception? This Roman Catholic church stands as the oldest in the city. Its story is one of faith, community, and architectural beauty.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception’s origins trace back to 1881. Serangoon served as its outstation. Father Casimir-Jean Saleilles journeyed by boat to serve Catholic families. He visited lepers and aided the poor.

In 1883 Sultan Abu Bakar donated land. A small church dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes was built. This humble building later became a funeral parlor.

The present Church of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1927. M Duvelle constructed it. Bishop Barillon blessed it in 1921. Back then only a wooden bridge connected Johor and Singapore. Sultan Ibrahim donated a large statue of Our Lady. It stands in front of the church. Noel Goh blessed it in 1947.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception stands as a testament to faith. It is a center for Catholic life. Priests uphold traditions through preaching and pastoral care. Their work extends beyond Johor Bahru’s boundaries.

Father Saleilles played a crucial role. Born in France in 1852 he became a priest in 1876. He arrived in Singapore in 1877 to learn Chinese. This helped him serve more parishioners. He served in the Bukit Timah parish. He ministered to lepers and the blind. In 1880 he moved to Serangoon. He established a place of worship for Johor’s growing Catholic community.

Construction of the original church moved quickly. The chapel completed in 1883 was named Our Lady of Lourdes. Chinese immigrants made up the growing community. Many stood outside during mass due to lack of space. This prompted plans for a new church.

Father Saleilles died in 1916 before seeing the new church. In 1921 the new Church of the Immaculate Conception was blessed. It was finally completed in 1927.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception showcases neo-Gothic style. It has a four-story tower. Arched windows and a steeple with a cross adorn it. Inside three aisles are separated by columns and arches. Clerestory windows illuminate the space.

Outside a life-size marble statue of the Virgin Mary greets visitors. The Sultan of Johor gifted the statue. It arrived from Italy in 1954. Father Noel Goh blessed it.

Today the Church of the Immaculate Conception continues to serve. It received government funds in 2022 for maintenance. This recognizes its importance as a heritage site. Mass services are held daily in multiple languages.

The Church of the Immaculate Conception stands tall. It represents history, faith, and community in Johor Bahru. Its doors remain open. Its story continues to inspire.
