A beacon of hope. That’s how many describe The Universal Church in Detroit. The Universal Church, originally a breakaway congregation from the Triumph the Church and Kingdom of God in Christ, has a unique and captivating history. Founded in 1944 right here in Detroit by James F. Jones, better known as Prophet Jones, The Universal Church quickly gained attention. Jones, a former pastor and missionary, claimed to be a faith healer and even the second coming of Christ. His charismatic preaching and purported abilities drew followers to The Universal Church, establishing it as a significant presence within the city’s religious landscape. He led the church, holding the title of Dominion Ruler, until his death in 1971. Following Jones’s passing, leadership transitioned to James Schaffer. The church itself is predominantly African American and identifies with the Holiness Pentecostal movement. It’s fascinating to consider the impact of such a figure on the religious landscape of Detroit, shaping The Universal Church into what it is today.
