“Why a tree?” That’s the question artist Mark Reed likely faced when he envisioned The Tree of Life Installation. This Cambridge masterpiece isn’t just metal and leaves. It’s a story etched in steel.

The Tree of Life Installation stands tall. It offers a space for reflection. It even brings joy during difficult days.

Commissioned by the Kings Lynn Hospitals’ League of Friends, The Tree of Life Installation helps raise funds for the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Kings Lynn NHS Foundation Trust. The hospital needed a place of calm. Mark Reed delivered just that.

Created during the challenging Covid lockdowns, The Tree of Life Installation was installed in March 2022. The 4.5-meter stainless steel sculpture boasts over 2,000 shimmering leaves. Each leaf is engraved with personal messages. They hold memories.

Since 1953, the League of Friends has raised millions. They buy equipment. They fund projects. All to improve patient care. The Tree of Life Installation is their latest effort.

Reed has personal connections to the hospital. He lost his father to cancer there. His son Oscar was born there. The Tree of Life Installation represents both loss and new life.

Heike Schaefer, a palliative care facilitator, championed the project. She wanted a space for relatives to retreat. They could celebrate loved ones. They could honor lives.

Reed sculpted faces into the trunk. He added creatures within the branches. The leaves cast dappled shade. Shadows move throughout the day. He hopes these details engage viewers. He aims to provide respite from hospital stress.

The Tree of Life Installation made quite a journey. It travelled through Norfolk with a police escort. Reed’s four children witnessed the delivery.

The Tree of Life Installation is more than art. It reflects sentiments. It holds wisdom. It’s an ever-changing memorial to loved ones. It honors community and family. Above all, it celebrates the NHS.

Leaves can be engraved with personal messages. These messages celebrate life. They honor those who have passed.

Despite rain, people gathered to see the Tree of Life. They listened to music. They reflected. The hospital recognizes the importance of the artwork for the visitors and patients.

The Tree of Life Installation raises funds for the Kings Lynn Hospital League of Friends. It stands as a symbol of hope. It ensures that those who pass through the hospital are never forgotten. It is a place to reflect on the lives and loves of people expanding into the canopy over time.
